The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is back in the House of Commons and seeks to legalise assisted suicide. It will have its Second Reading and vote on Friday 11 Sept. The Church believes in the dignity and value of every human life. This deeply flawed Bill, if passed, could lead to vulnerable people feeling pressured to end their lives and risks putting many hospices and care homes in the position of no longer being able to operate. Please write to your MP to make your voice heard and oppose the Bill, even if you have done so on a previous occasion.
Sacramental Preparation Programmes keep an eye on the newsletter and an ear to notices during the Sunday Masses for the start of the programmes of preparation for Holy Communion (those going into school year 4 and above) and Confirmation (those going into school year 10 and above). Naturally, the best preparation for our children is the faith and example of the family, and your prayers as parents are vitally important so get preparing!
Season of Creation from 1st Sep-4th Oct: Our parish joins Christians worldwide for this month-long journey, starting with the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation and ends on the Feast of St Francis of Assisi. Inspired by Pope Francis’s Laudato Si’, it is a time to renew our relationship with God’s creation. Through prayer, simpler living, and action, we are called to protect our environment and support those vulnerable to climate. Please join us in prayer and look out for upcoming parish initiatives.
Book + Circle: Our summer reading is a novel, My Father’s House by Joseph O’Connor. It is based on the true story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, an Irish priest who saved thousands of Jews and escaped Allied prisoners from Nazi-occupied Rome in 1943. If you’d like to come along and chat about the book we will be meeting on Fri 4th Sep after the 10am Mass Be sure to take advantage of buying a copy second hand online.
Parish Sunday Lunches. As usual, there is no lunch in August. If you or your group would like to offer to host a lunch please contact the parish office. We are looking for a host for the September lunch – please contact the parish office if you can help this wonderful parish social event!
Young Adult Retreat Day, 26 Sept, 10am to 6.30pm, St Wilfrid’s Church, Burgess Hill, RH15 9EN (£20). Young Adults (18-35) are invited to a jam-packed day of prayer, formation, friendship, and fun – praying to discover true peace within ourselves, to become peacemakers in the world around us, and to be renewed with an apostolic fire burning brightly within our hearts. For details contact the parish office.
St Joseph’s Pre-School have written to us saying they are ’saddened to announce that St Joseph’s Pre-School will be closing permanently at the end of this term. The Pre-School has been part of the parish community for over 40 years, and many families will remember with fondness the friendships, care and connections formed during their time with us. Unfortunately, a combination of ongoing financial pressures, reduced enrolment, and a lack of committee members means we are no longer able to operate sustainably or within our constitutional framework. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Parish, our families, and parishioners for their support over the years. We kindly ask you to continue to remember our families and staff in your prayers as they navigate this difficult transition.
Marriage Anniversary Mass on Sat 3rd Oct at 11.30am in Arundel Cathedral. Whether you are you celebrating a special anniversary or simply giving thanks for your marriage this year. There will also be a wonderful opportunity to re-new your wedding vows during Mass. This will be followed by a small drinks reception in the Cathedral Centre. For info: Deacon Simon South, Marriage and Family Life Adviser at E: simon.south@abdiocese.org.uk.
Continue to pray for Fr Stephen Wang as the sixth Bishop of our diocese. Fr Stephen was born in London in 1966 and grew up in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. He read Theology and Religious Studies at Cambridge University from 1986 to 1989, before undertaking priestly formation at the Venerable English College in Rome from 1992 to 1997. He was ordained to the priesthood on 3 January 1998. His episcopal ordination will take place on Mon 19 Oct, the Feast of St Philip Howard. Space within the Cathedral is limited, with lay, religious and clergy representatives at-tending the Mass by invitation only. The celebration will be livestreamed, to enable as many people as possible to participate in the Mass online. On Sat 24 Oct at 11.30am, Bishop Stephen will celebrate a special Mass of Welcome at Worth Abbey near Crawley, attended by representatives from diocesan deaneries, new parishes and schools. Further details will be shared soon. The Diocese will provide a coach from every deanery and new parish, to support participation from across our family of faith.
